Are you on Pinterest yet? If not you should be, and if you haven’t heard of it – where have you been? It’s the hottest new social media site to hit the web and we’ve wasted no time jumping on the bandwagon. It’s an online take on the old corkboard where you can “pin” your favorite images found anywhere on the web, follow other pinners to see what they’re pinning and share ideas/inspiration for just about everything. I’ve found countless recipes, decorating ideas, hair-styles, fashion, and all around great ideas (I’ve included just a few of my favorites). As a designer it’s also an incredible way to collect inspiration for projects. Snowpocalypse 2012

It’s mid-January, and the greater Seattle area is shut down and paralyzed with one of the most hyped up and eventful snow storms we’ve experienced in a while. We started hearing about it early in the week, and it quickly became a topic which consumed most of our news programs and news articles. It’s always interesting to see how people handle snow storms in Seattle. The much awaited storm quickly started earning name such as “Snowpocalypse”, “Snowmageddon”, and “Snowtorius-BIG”. They even predicted it would be the most snow in one storm since 1990, quite a statement if you ask me.

It’s pretty common to see cars that are not meant for snow at all out attempting to brave the elements only to find themselves pulled over to the side calling friends/family for a ride. I know we should be used to it because we usually get a snow storm at least once a year, but it always seems like the first time Seattle-ites have seen the fluffy white flakes falling from the sky. I remember one year there were issues with not enough salting/plowing which left people in ditches and accidents left and right. As much as snow is beautiful and fun to play in I cannot wait to be able to drive in my car to the grocery store, work, gym, or wherever; it’s amazing how being stuck makes you appreciate the little things. Based on this one storm alone, I have decided that rear wheel drive cars are unacceptable forms of transformation. I know one thing is for sure, my next car will be an SUV!

Rest assured, through wind, rain, snow, and sleet, creative must go on; we’re all working remotely through the storm!

Design Inspiration: Vintage Pinball Machines

Over the weekend, I finally got to check out the Seattle Pinball Museum. I had been wanting to go for awhile now and it did not disappoint! They have over 40 pinball machines, mostly of the vintage variety, which you can play (as much as you want) after paying admission. I was totally blown away by the playfields – intricate illustrations, hyper-saturated colors, and superb typography. My favorites were the 60′s and 70′s machines, because they had the best themes (circuses, dinosaurs, cowboys, race cars).

How fun and challenging would it be to design the playfield for a pinball machine? It’s a truly interactive piece. Much like designing for the web or an infographic, you have to direct players, using visuals cues to help them guide that silver ball for maximum points, as well as engaging them with graphics, lights, and sounds. The amount of detail that went into these is truly amazing!
